{% hint style="warning" %}
Setup and use of P4G CEP for Steam Deck is more complex and involved than on Windows.

Before starting, you should have a basic understanding of the KDE Plasma (Desktop Mode) environment and how to use the Dolphin file manager.

Make sure to **read all the directions carefully** before doing something you don't understand.
{% endhint %}

## Requirements

* A **Steam Deck** running the latest version of the SteamOS software
* An unmodified installation of **Persona 4 Golden** from Steam
  * Only English **text** language is supported
  * Both **English** and **Japanese** voices are supported
* A connected keyboard and mouse (wired or wireless)
* At least **7 GB of free space** on your Steam Deck's internal storage
  * If P4G is installed on the microSD card, at least **2 GB of free space** there as well

{% hint style="success" %}
An external display connected via a USB-C hub is highly recommended.

Installing P4G to the Steam Deck's **internal storage** is recommended.
{% endhint %}

{% hint style="danger" %}
We do not provide support for pirated copies of the game.
{% endhint %}

<table data-header-hidden><thead><tr><th width="184"></th><th></th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td>Site</td><td>Link</td></tr><tr><td>Download from <strong>GameBanana</strong></td><td><a href="https://gamebanana.com/mods/download/50961">https://gamebanana.com/mods/download/50961</a></td></tr><tr><td>Download from <strong>Nexus Mods</strong></td><td><a href="https://www.nexusmods.com/persona4golden/mods/11?tab=files">https://www.nexusmods.com/persona4golden/mods/11?tab=files</a></td></tr></tbody></table>

## Set Up P4G-Mods folder

We will use a dedicated directory for our P4G modding tools. If you ever need to create a file backup, take a screenshot, or write down a note, save it in this folder to stay organized.

<details>

<summary>Important Terms</summary>

**P4G-Mods** folder: A unified folder for your P4G modding setup.

There are four folders in the **P4G-Mods** folder:

* **\_Reloaded-II**: This folder contains the **Reloaded II** mod loader.
  * You'll learn more about Reloaded II soon!
* **Backups**: Use this folder to store any important files or folders you want to save.
* **Notes:** Use this folder to store any information you think is worth keeping.
* **Setup:** Use this folder to store the prerequisite runtimes your modding tools need.

</details>

### Prepare P4G-Mods Folder

* Extract your downloaded P4G CEP archive.
* Open the extracted archive and locate the **P4G-Mods** folder inside.

### Move P4G-Mods Folder

* Move the **P4G-Mods** folder to a suitable location on your Steam Deck's **internal storage**.

{% hint style="info" %}
We recommend creating a new folder in your home directory such as **/home/deck/Mods/** and placing your **P4G-Mods** folder inside it.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/356QeB34mEMpt5rQkZ1c" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="danger" %}
**Double-check your directory path!**

Make sure your **P4G-Mods** folder is NOT in any of these locations:

* Any **Wine** or **wineprefix** directory
* Any **Steam** or **Steam library** directory
* The **Persona 4 Golden** game folder
* Any directory that actively syncs data to the cloud (Dropbox, etc.)
  * Backups that run manually or on an infrequent schedule are okay

If your **P4G-Mods** folder is in one of these locations, you must move it to a different location before continuing. As mentioned above, we recommend **/home/deck/Mods/**.
{% endhint %}

## Download Prerequisites

{% hint style="danger" %}
Reloaded II regularly updates its prerequisites, so these instructions may be outdated.

Check the Reloaded II [**website**](https://reloaded-project.github.io/Reloaded-II/) and [**GitHub repository**](https://github.com/Reloaded-Project/Reloaded-II/) for up-to-date information.
{% endhint %}

There are a few core runtime libraries our modding tools need to run. We will install them later using a program called **Protontricks**.

* Download these prerequisites to your **/P4G-Mods/Setup/** directory:

<table><thead><tr><th width="344.5">Prerequisite</th><th>File Name</th></tr></thead><tbody><tr><td><a href="https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/9.0"><strong>.NET 9 Desktop Runtime (Windows x64)</strong></a></td><td><code>windowsdesktop-runtime-9.0.##-win-x64.exe</code></td></tr><tr><td><a href="https://dotnet.microsoft.com/en-us/download/dotnet/9.0"><strong>.NET 9 Desktop Runtime (Windows x86)</strong></a></td><td><code>windowsdesktop-runtime-9.0.##-win-x86.exe</code></td></tr><tr><td><a href="https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/downloads/#microsoft-visual-c-redistributable-for-visual-studio-2022"><strong>Visual C++ Redistributable (Windows x64)</strong></a></td><td><code>vc_redist.x64.exe</code></td></tr><tr><td><a href="https://visualstudio.microsoft.com/downloads/#microsoft-visual-c-redistributable-for-visual-studio-2022"><strong>Visual C++ Redistributable (Windows x86)</strong></a></td><td><code>vc_redist.x86.exe</code></td></tr></tbody></table>

{% hint style="warning" %}
Make sure you are downloading the **Windows** versions of each prerequisite and that you download both the **x64** and **x86** versions. You should have **4 EXE files** when you are done.

[Install Flatpaks](/install/install-flatpaks)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# Install Flatpaks

Download and install the Protontricks and Flatseal flatpaks.

Both P4G and **Reloaded II**, the program we use to mod it, are Windows binaries, but we can't install the modding prerequisites for P4G CEP the traditional way on Linux.

We'll need some additional tools in order to get Reloaded II working on the Steam Deck:

* **Protontricks**: This tool lets you configure the Proton compatibility layer for Steam games—it's like Winetricks, but for Proton! We'll use it to install the prerequisite runtimes Reloaded II needs.
* **Flatseal:** This tool lets you configure the permissions given to **flatpak** applications. We're going to use it to give **Protontricks** access to your microSD card.

<details>

<summary>Useful Terms</summary>

* **Proton:** A compatibility layer by Valve that can make Windows games run on Linux. It's a combination of two other open-source projects, Wine and DXVK.
* **Flatpak:** A platform for running packaged applications called **flatpaks**. Flatpaks are the ideal way to get new software on the Steam Deck and other immutable distros as they will persist between major OS updates.
* **Flathub:** Think of this as the "app store" for flatpaks. It's a repository where creators and community maintainers can upload flatpaks for users to install.
* **Discover:** A software center application by KDE that lets users easily browse, install, and update flatpaks.&#x20;

</details>

## Install Prerequisite Flatpaks

{% hint style="success" %}
Want to use the command line instead?

```
flatpak install flathub com.github.tchx84.Flatseal
flatpak install flathub com.github.Matoking.protontricks
```

{% endhint %}

### Launch Discover

* Open the application launcher and launch **Discover** under the **System** tab.

<figure><img src="/files/3b1tiBPDKP3f9OYz2weU" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Install Flatseal

# Steam and P4G

Configure Steam and verify your P4G installation is unmodified.

Before we set up mods for the game, we're going to configure a few settings in Steam to make sure you have the best experience.

## Open Steam Properties <a href="#open-steam-properties" id="open-steam-properties"></a>

* Open **Steam** and go to your game **Library**.

<figure><img src="https://p4g.cep.one/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F152149641-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252F-MfLyHlgiVPp3jfPg3ha%252Fuploads%252FT5Qv0s0O7qoEuH2YWpFU%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3Df934d815-1a93-4646-b5cc-1313d859f204&#x26;width=768&#x26;dpr=4&#x26;quality=100&#x26;sign=e9322b3&#x26;sv=1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Select **Persona 4 Golden** from your list of games.

<figure><img src="https://p4g.cep.one/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F152149641-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252F-MfLyHlgiVPp3jfPg3ha%252Fuploads%252F902iyug1FYVtXZ8535iY%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D96ee2769-846f-4872-b790-93e60cab5a7e&#x26;width=768&#x26;dpr=4&#x26;quality=100&#x26;sign=8f7ba2cd&#x26;sv=1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Right-click the game and select **Properties**.

<figure><img src="https://p4g.cep.one/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F152149641-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-legacy-files%2Fo%2Fassets%252F-MfLyHlgiVPp3jfPg3ha%252F-MfxfkJnKudlnS9E_oaW%252F-Mfxfo9ppF92Iv6zzE4Y%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3De2134afb-899b-4fb9-b8d7-5fcc2c0ba497&#x26;width=768&#x26;dpr=4&#x26;quality=100&#x26;sign=8c0b5dde&#x26;sv=1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Disable Automatic Updates

Updates to games can make mods stop working until their creators can update them for the new version. By disabling automatic updates, you'll be able to keep playing P4G with mods if it ever gets a surprise update.

* In the **Properties** window, select the **Updates** tab.
* Set **Automatic Updates** to **Wait until I launch the game**.

<figure><img src="/files/FKOTEHN1wwi2fu4Re9R6" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

<details>

<summary>Wait a second, how will this help me if the game updates?<br>Steam is just going to update P4G as soon as I launch it!</summary>

Steam will only try to update P4G if it is launched *directly through Steam.* You're going to be launching the game through the **Reloaded II** mod manager instead using a special shortcut.

This way, even if we get a surprise update that breaks mod compatibility, you'll still be able to play without updating.

</details>

## Set Text Language to English <a href="#set-text-language-to-english" id="set-text-language-to-english"></a>

{% hint style="info" %}
This setting only changes the language of the game's **text**, not the character voices.

P4G CEP is compatible with both English and Japanese character voices.
{% endhint %}

P4G CEP is only compatible with the **English-text** version of the game. If you are playing with another text language, you will need to change the game's Language setting in Steam.

* In the **Properties** window, select the **General** tab.
* Set **Language** to **English**.

<figure><img src="/files/yW2r4WGK5X3nLMmmCBCl" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Force Proton 8.0-5 <a href="#clean-game-files" id="clean-game-files"></a>

Reloaded II can encounter issues with newer Proton versions (freezes, invisible window, etc.). Thankfully, Steam makes it very easy to force a specific Proton version for a game.

* In the **Properties** window, select the **Compatibility** tab.
* Enable **Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool**.
  * In the dropdown window that appears below, select **Proton 8.0-5**.

<figure><img src="/files/sug0UGm1u4Rp7vwt5yuh" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Verify Game Files <a href="#clean-game-files" id="clean-game-files"></a>

P4G CEP is only compatible with the latest unmodified version of the game.

To save a lot of time later, let's take a little time now to make sure you have the latest version of P4G and that it's not modified in any way.

{% hint style="warning" %}
P4G CEP is not compatible with the old **32-bit** version of P4G.\
These steps will permanently upgrade your game to the latest **64-bit** version.

For more information, refer to [**this GameBanana page**](https://gamebanana.com/blogs/19837).
{% endhint %}

This command will compare your installed P4G files to the versions on Steam's servers. If Steam detects any differences between the files, it will re-download them so they match up.

* In the **Properties** window, select the **Installed Files** tab.
* Click **Verify integrity of game files**.

<figure><img src="/files/eR9aF2GbEsqGD67VOuiQ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* The **Verify** button will disappear and be replaced with a progress counter. Wait for it to finish.

<figure><img src="/files/SHOEj7N5ymflTQvyldPD" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

You'll see one of two messages:

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="All \_\_\_ files successfully validated" %}

<figure><img src="/files/9PbtyFn9PL1E35Akl4Cf" alt=""><figcaption><p>It's okay if you see a different number here.</p></figcaption></figure>

* You're all set! Move on to the next step.
  {% endtab %}

{% tab title="\_\_\_ files failed to validate..." %}

<figure><img src="/files/488YbB7Ck6Lg6LvAIExc" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Some of your game files were missing or modified.\
Steam will begin re-downloading these files to repair your installation.

* Wait for Steam to finish the repair process before continuing.

You can track the repair process in Steam's download manager, the same way you would with a game installation or update:

<figure><img src="/files/sfed8b5747BmrJYYC99Z" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

<figure><img src="/files/lenG8rv3atfVC9iV4sOw" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

[Protontricks](/install/protontricks)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# Protontricks

Configure the P4G wineprefix and install the prerequisite runtimes.

Now that we have our flatpaks installed, we'll configure them and install our prerequisite runtimes.

## Create Wineprefix

P4G must be launched at least once so Steam can create a **wineprefix** for it.

<details>

<summary>Important Terms</summary>

* **Wineprefix:** A directory that contains a "mini-Windows" system for a program on Linux. It contains compatibility configurations and an entire filesystem that mimics a Windows setup.

</details>

* **Launch P4G** through Steam. This will create a wineprefix directory for the game.
* Once you reach the main menu, quit the game.

{% hint style="danger" %}
If for some reason you can't reach the main menu, **DO NOT CONTINUE!**

Something is wrong with your P4G game install or Steam Deck that has nothing to do with mods or this guide. You'll need to resolve that before installing mods for the game.
{% endhint %}

## Grant Filesystem Access

By default, Protontricks has limited access to your Steam Deck's filesystem.

This is great for security, but since we're modding a game we'll need to open up access to your user files and microSD card.

### Launch Flatseal

* Close **Discover** if it is still open.
* Open the application launcher and launch **Flatseal** under the **Utilities** tab.

<figure><img src="/files/G6yWUsnhxSi6PeFwXO2n" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Grant Filesystem Access

* In the small menu on the left, find and select **Protontricks**.

<figure><img src="/files/xxvY8A6KSRKhm4oShcXP" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Grant Internal Storage Access

* In the big window on the right, scroll down through the configuration to the **Filesystem** section.
  * Enable **All user files**.

<figure><img src="/files/HrCGx5WEeHv7nqWRTKzR" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

This will give Protontricks access to your user files in `/home/`, including your **P4G-Mods** directory.

#### Grant microSD Card Access

{% hint style="warning" %}
**Do not skip this step**, even if P4G is not installed on your microSD card!

Protontricks will whine (pun intended) about not having access if you don't grant it.
{% endhint %}

* Under **Filesystem > Other files**, click the **Add directory** button on the right (folder with a plus sign).
  * In the empty box that appears, enter **`/run/media`**.

<figure><img src="/files/yHOpeEOWyvwR7EFCHVjq" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

This will give Protontricks access to your microSD card files and games.

<details>

<summary>Some scary exclamation marks appeared!</summary>

Don't worry! Those just indicate that you've made changes from the default configuration.

</details>

* When you are finished, close **Flatseal**. Your changes will automatically save.

## Show Dot Files

On Linux, you can hide a file or directory by adding a "dot" to the start of its name (eg {`.hidden`").

We're going to be accessing hidden directories as part of the modding process, so we'll configure Protontricks to show "dot files."

<details>

<summary>Important Terms</summary>

* **Runtime:** A library of functions and instructions that your PC executes while a program is running. Many games and programs share the same common runtimes.

* [**.NET**](https://dotnet.microsoft.com)**:** A free cross-platform software framework by Microsoft.

</details>

### Launch Protontricks

* Open the application launcher and launch **Protontricks** under the **Utilities** tab.

<figure><img src="/files/9WaC4OqyirwEssIlOKKd" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* A list of your installed Steam games will appear. Select **Persona 4 Golden** and click **OK**.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you can't find **Persona 4 Golden** in the list, you forgot to [**run the game**](#create-wineprefix) earlier!
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/sloEvRx4lbaStFXmYnIm" alt=""><figcaption><p>Thanks to <strong>rudiger</strong> for this image.</p></figcaption></figure>

### Enable Dot Files

You'll now be in the **Winetricks** menu for P4G. It might take a few seconds to open.

#### Open Winecfg

* In the first menu, click **Select the default prefix**, then click **OK**.

<figure><img src="/files/Bo7xr6uXO4TgwSZ0tKnj" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* In the second menu, click **Run winecfg**, then click **OK**.&#x20;

<figure><img src="/files/yt0qwA7eNAucTBGIuO9v" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Configure Wine

You'll now be in the **Wine configuration** menu for P4G. We're nearly done here!

* Select the **Drives** tab at the top of the window.
* Enable **Show dot files** in the bottom left of the window.
* Click **Apply**, then **OK**.

<figure><img src="/files/PtMOCtNDaDlXOBkGOlx5" alt=""><figcaption><p>Thanks to <strong>rudiger</strong> for this image.</p></figcaption></figure>

Whew, we're all done here!

* Go ahead and close the **Wine configuration** window,
  * then close the **Winetricks** window that appears,
    * and finally close the **Protontricks** window that appears after that.

## Install Prerequisite Runtimes

Remember those prerequisite runtimes you downloaded a while ago? It's time to install them!

<details>

<summary>Important Terms</summary>

* **Runtime:** A library of functions and instructions that your PC executes while a program is running. Many games and programs share the same common runtimes.

<details>

<summary>I'm beholding the protagonist's <em>glitchy</em> face instead!</summary>

Don't worry, this is just a visual bug and won't affect the game itself. Keep going!

### Update File Path

* Select the **Update** button to update the file path to start browsing for **P4G.exe**.

<figure><img src="https://p4g.cep.one/~gitbook/image?url=https%3A%2F%2F152149641-files.gitbook.io%2F%7E%2Ffiles%2Fv0%2Fb%2Fgitbook-x-prod.appspot.com%2Fo%2Fspaces%252F-MfLyHlgiVPp3jfPg3ha%252Fuploads%252FRbABS1NwCy3CkFHRI3Ej%252Fimage.png%3Falt%3Dmedia%26token%3D0a842534-b470-4698-82e0-6653cf572c76&#x26;width=768&#x26;dpr=4&#x26;quality=100&#x26;sign=d90a985&#x26;sv=1" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

A file picker window will open.

* Select **My Computer** to view all the drives (real and virtual) connected to the Steam Deck.

<figure><img src="/files/x9pi2gfZn0jYSCQ9Dbnv" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

Where you go next depends on where P4G is installed:

{% tabs %}
{% tab title="Internal Storage" %}

* Navigate to:

```
Z:\home\deck\.local\share\Steam\steamapps\common\Persona 4 Golden
```

* Select **P4G.exe**, then click **Save**.
  {% endtab %}

{% tab title="microSD Card" %}
{% hint style="warning" %}
This is the tricky part about modding P4G on the microSD card.

**Make sure to go slowly and follow every step!**
{% endhint %}

#### Get microSD Card ID

* Navigate to:

```
Z:\run\media\deck\
```

You'll see a directory named with a random string of letters and numbers here. This is your **microSD card ID**, which you'll need in a later step.

* In a text editor (KWrite or Kate), make a note of your **microSD card ID** and save it as a TXT file in your **/P4G-Mods/Notes/** directory.

#### Continue to P4G.exe

* Back in Reloaded II, continue navigating the full file path:

```
Z:\run\media\deck\<microsd-card-id>\steamapps\common\Persona 4 Golden
```

* Select **P4G.exe**, then click **Save**.
  {% endtab %}
  {% endtabs %}

* Double-check that line next to the **Update** button shows your path to **P4G.exe**.

<figure><img src="/files/ER4YkPcnSYHAHvlS5Ysd" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Moving On

Congrats, that was the hardest step!

* Keep Reloaded II open and go to the next page.

{% content-ref url="/pages/hBqZE2Bortv156lDhbyt" %}
[Customize Mods](/install/customize-mods)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# Customize Mods

Tweak the mods included with P4G CEP to your liking.

Time for the fun part! Let's go through some of the adjustments you can make to P4G CEP to really make it your own, as well as how to enable and disable the mods included with the pack.

## Open Mod Loadout

* In Reloaded II, select **Configure Mods** (or the protagonist's small ***dreamy*** face on the left) to open the mod loadout window.

## Configure for Japanese Dub

{% hint style="success" %}
If you plan to use the English dub in the game, skip this step.
{% endhint %}

If you plan on playing the game with the Japanese dub, you'll need to configure Reloaded II to use the Japanese version of the **Dungeon Text Fixes** mod.

* Under the FIXES divider, locate the two **Dungeon Text Fixes** mods:
  * **Dungeon Text Fixes**
  * **Dungeon Text Fixes (Japanese ver.)**

<figure><img src="/files/Q8HZTrmEkNydspC9r8IY" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* **Disable** the English version of the mod by clicking the red plus sign next to **Dungeon Text Fixes**. This will change it into a grey minus sign.
* **Enable** the Japanese version of the mod by clicking the grey minus sign next to **Dungeon Text Fixes (Japanese ver.)**. This will change it into a red plus sign.

<figure><img src="/files/HWkyIIdGahaxBXaV5maQ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Skip Intro Logos

{% hint style="success" %}
If you don't want the game to skip the intro logos, skip this step.
{% endhint %}

You can have the game skip the Atlus / P-Studio logos and boot straight to the opening movie.

* Under the **ESSENTIALS** divider, select the **Persona Essentials** mod.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Make sure you are **selecting** Persona Essentials and not **disabling** it!\
Click on the "Persona Essentials" text, not the red plus sign.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/uAWJdK7eJ4Pwh3QirJ3T" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Select **Configure Mod** towards the bottom of the window, to the right of the mod icon.

<figure><img src="/files/Bwv7TLPHSZwaS3H1EHLs" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* In the **Configure Mod** window that appears, find **Persona 4 Golden (64-bit) Config** and enable **Intro Skip** by clicking on the slider.

<figure><img src="/files/eb2jQ5OnP47kpTURj4gj" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Click **Save** to apply your change, then close the **Configure Mod** window.

<figure><img src="/files/HTjH7qgm954aUKDhoypH" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Customize Opening Movie

{% hint style="success" %}
If you don't want to change the default "Shadow World" opening movie, skip this step.
{% endhint %}

Shadow World not your jam? You can change the opening movie to "Pursuing My True Self" from the original Persona 4 or have the game choose one of the two openings at random.

* Under the **ESSENTIALS** divider, select the **Alternating Openings** mod.

{% hint style="warning" %}
Make sure you are **selecting** Alternating Openings and not **disabling** it!\
Click on the "Alternating Openings" text, not the red plus sign.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/bPJDDFj11440S1FazTpQ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Select **Configure Mod** towards the bottom of the window, to the right of the mod icon.

<figure><img src="/files/IVYosTMUoMh163NV4Eno" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* In the **Configure Mod** window that appears, enable **P4 Initial Opening** or **Randomise Initial Opening** by clicking on the slider.

<figure><img src="/files/bM5rnzuTOlXEa44QcFQQ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Click **Save** to apply your change, then close the **Configure Mod** window.

<figure><img src="/files/HTjH7qgm954aUKDhoypH" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Configure Mod Loadout

You can enable or disable each mod in P4G CEP individually.

* To **enable** a mod, click the grey minus sign next to its name so it changes to a red plus sign.
* To **disable** a mod, click the red plus sign next to its name to it changes to a grey minus sign.

Have fun customizing the modpack to suit your preferences!

{% hint style="warning" %}
Do not disable any of the mods in the **ESSENTIALS** section—they are core programs that are used to load mods into the game.

Do not reorder the mods included with P4G CEP. This load order has been specifically chosen to ensure no mods overwrite each other's functionality.
{% endhint %}

## Moving On

{% content-ref url="/pages/5EHdP5fvnbHnNbGxXtY6" %}
[Create Steam Shortcut](/install/create-steam-shortcut)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# Create Steam Shortcut

Create a shortcut to launch P4G with mods.

If you were to launch P4G in Game Mode now, Reloaded II would not launch and your mods would not be injected into the game. We need to create a shortcut to launch Reloaded II and have it load the game for us.

## Add Reloaded II to Steam

* Open your **/P4G-Mods/\_Reloaded-II** directory.
* **Right-click** Reloaded-II.exe and select **Add to Steam**.

<figure><img src="/files/52Ot30NZF7vUpN47Y3KU" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

This will create a new entry for **Reloaded-II.exe** on Steam.

## Configure Shortcut Properties

We don't just want to launch Reloaded II in Game Mode, we want it to run P4G with our mods!

* Right-click **Reloaded-II.exe** in your Steam library and select **Properties…**

<figure><img src="/files/BKwBn0PDpV0reumSPuGA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Customize Shortcut

* In the **Shortcut** tab, rename **Reloaded-II.exe** to **Persona 4 Golden (Reloaded)**.
* Click the empty square next to the shortcut name to open the **Choose Icon** file picker.
  * Navigate to **/P4G-Mods/Artwork/** and select **icon.png**.

<figure><img src="/files/rbsVugewOIVez3nd34mO" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Adjust Launch Options

This will make Reloaded II launch P4G instead of just launching itself.

* In the **Shortcut** tab, locate the **Launch Options** box.
* If P4G is installed on the Steam Deck's **internal storage**, enter:

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```
STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1113000/ %command% --launch "Z:\home\deck\.local\share\Steam\steamapps\common\Persona 4 Golden\P4G.exe"
```

{% endcode %}

* If P4G is installed on the **microSD card** instead, enter:

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```
STEAM_COMPAT_DATA_PATH=/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1113000/ %command% --launch "Z:\run\media\deck\<microsd-card-id>\steamapps\common\Persona 4 Golden\P4G.exe"
```

{% endcode %}

{% hint style="info" %}
Replace <**microsd-card-id>** with the microSD card ID you found when setting the path to **P4G.exe** in Reloaded II. You should have saved it to a TXT file in **/P4G-Mods/Notes/**.
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/ZdwzPBi9TqHxQmnOEuFu" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Force Proton 8.0-5

Just like P4G itself, we need to force Reloaded II to run with **Proton 8.0-5**.

* Switch to the **Compatibility** tab.
* Enable **Force the use of a specific Steam Play compatibility tool**.
  * In the dropdown that appears, select **Proton 8.0-5**.

<figure><img src="/files/btsmL0PQcCniIhCyy2SI" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Add Artwork to Shortcut

We've prepared some custom artwork for your **Persona 4 Golden (Reloaded)** shortcut, so you won't confuse it with the vanilla P4G entry in your library.

* Close the **Properties** window for Persona 4 Golden.
* Make sure you have a **Recent Games** shelf in your Steam library.
  * If you don't, use the dropdown or add a new shelf for **Recent Games**.

### Apply Header Artwork

* Launch and immediately close **Persona 4 Golden (Relodaed)** in your Steam library.

This will expand the game's **header** art on the **Recent Games** shelf and move it all the way to the left.

<div align="center"><figure><img src="/files/5Gsq4mXKe4Zqc9Vl8QkV" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure></div>

* Right-click the header and select **Manage > Set custom artwork** to open a file picker.

<figure><img src="/files/rbo8NTnCCFhuz17Bnfn8" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* In the file picker, navigate to your **/P4G-Mods/Artwork/** directory and select **header.jpg**.

Your header should immediately update.

<figure><img src="/files/a4hnZzeJ8OQzcmKkMLgu" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Apply Poster Artwork

* Launch any game other than **Persona 4 Golden (Reloaded)** in your Steam library.

This will collapse the game into its **poster** art (or lack thereof).

<figure><img src="/files/06fyyDtJjbxkuj9HEX9F" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Right-click the poster and select **Manage > Set custom artwork** to open a file picker.

<figure><img src="/files/PB4BEjeYPmgUoa2NoKw9" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* In the file picker, navigate to your **/P4G-Mods/Artwork/** directory and select **poster.jpg**.

Your poster should immediately update.

<figure><img src="/files/OowBgZNfsqjPHPuGW4Cj" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

### Apply Hero and Logo Artwork

* Click on **Persona 4 Golden (Reloaded)** in your Steam library to open its details page.
* Right-click the empty hero at the top and select **Set Custom Background** to open a file picker.

<figure><img src="/files/BUaNVQkr5GBUw6Vpytlw" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* In the file picker, navigate to your **/P4G-Mods/Artwork/** directory and select **hero.jpg**.

Your hero should immediately update.

<figure><img src="/files/JAfNUsaqzKZ1JXO9lSKf" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Right-click the hero again and select **Set Custom Logo** to open a file picker.

<figure><img src="/files/S39FpqlHuRx2ISN7Gdfu" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* In the file picker, navigate to your **/P4G-Mods/Artwork/** directory and select **logo.png**.

Your logo should immediately update.

<figure><img src="/files/cGYDxcYl0gqgx5UuLnRF" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## Moving On

P4G is now ready to play! Let's go over a few things before our first test run.

{% content-ref url="/pages/1M3nF9ZPRPZVJk0we33q" %}
[Final Steps](/install/final-steps)
{% endcontent-ref %}

# Final Steps

Wrap up installation and play Persona 4 Golden!

{% hint style="info" %}
We'll be returning to **Gaming Mode** for these steps, so you may want to open this page on another device.
{% endhint %}

## A Few Tips Before Starting <a href="#a-few-tips-before-starting" id="a-few-tips-before-starting"></a>

### Save Often! <a href="#save-often" id="save-often"></a>

* **Save the game often and use all of the save slots.** You get 16 of them for a reason!
  * We recommend saving every night or every other night at the Dojima residence.

### Steam Deck Button Prompts

* Custom Steam Deck controller prompts are available in the game's **Config** menu.
  * **Config > Gamepad > Button Display > Steam**

### Configuring Custom Sub Menu <a href="#configuring-custom-sub-menu" id="configuring-custom-sub-menu"></a>

* The first time you open the Sub Menu, you'll be asked to configure the **Custom Sub Menu**.
  * If you just want all the basic QOL improvements, simply press the back button and Custom Sub Menu will set itself up automatically.
  * If you'd like to know more about each feature, select it in the menu for a brief explanation and deeper customization options.
* You can change these settings at any time—open the Sub Menu and press the Command Menu button to get back to the configuration window. See the [**FAQ**](https://p4g.cep.one/appendix/faq#how-do-i-open-the-configuration-menu-for-custom-sub-menu) for more info.

## Launch P4G

### Return to Gaming Mode

* Double-click the **Return to Gaming Mode** shortcut on your Steam Deck's desktop.

{% hint style="info" %}
If you are using a USB-C hub, you can unplug it now.
{% endhint %}

### Launch P4G

* Find **Persona 4 Golden (Reloaded)** in your game library and launch it.
  * If you can't find the game in the main menu, it will be in the **Non-Steam** section of your library.
* You'll see a **Launching from Wine** warning. We've already set up Proton and don't need the ASI Loader, so tap or click **Start Application**.

<figure><img src="/files/nn4JPWjtozFiPIqiLlIv" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* You should see a console window pop up for a few seconds, and after that P4G should load.

<figure><img src="/files/BCcKv1QnH9E4KqF8ahsy" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* If you see the text **MOD LOADER ENABLED** on the title screen, your mods are working!

<figure><img src="/files/OfW8nnIP4RV3DjLgz7AX" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

## All Done!

You're ready to play Persona 4 Golden!

{% hint style="success" %}
Run **Persona 4 Golden (Reloaded)** to launch P4G with mods.\
Run the original **Persona 4 Golden** app to launch vanilla P4G without mods.

Achievements, cloud saves, etc. still work when using mods.
{% endhint %}

You can jump right in, or you can check out the [**Extras**](/appendix/extras) page if you'd like to remove the **Launching with Wine** warning at startup.

# Extras

Additional tweaks for P4G CEP.

{% hint style="info" %}
You'll need to be in **Desktop Mode** with a keyboard and mouse to apply these tweaks.
{% endhint %}

## Disable "Launching from Wine" Window

The **Launching from Wine** window that appears when starting P4G with mods can be disabled with a config file tweak.

* Close **Reloaded II** and any running games.

### Open Config File

We need to open the Reloaded II config file, **ReloadedII.json**, in the **Kate** text editor.

* Open this directory:

{% code overflow="wrap" %}

```
/home/deck/.steam/steam/steamapps/compatdata/1113000/pfx/drive_c/users/steamuser/AppData/Roaming/Reloaded-Mod-Loader-II/
```

{% endcode %}

<figure><img src="/files/6y38aASAGXEehG8bE7Z5" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Right-click the file **ReloadedII.json** and select **Open with Kate**.

<figure><img src="/files/nsXI3j7uc9rZ7raRhByZ" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

{% hint style="info" %}
If you don't see **Open with Kate**, select **Open With** and manually select **Development > Kate** from the menu that appears.
{% endhint %}

### Adjust SkipWineLauncherWarning

* In **ReloadedII.json**, find the entry **`SkipWineLauncherWarning`** towards the bottom of the document.

<figure><img src="/files/FFP5wpRQnztTbvPH8ogV" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Change **`false`** to **`true`**.

<figure><img src="/files/vhCDW7RYI9qqiZlRTvzA" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Save **ReloadedII.json**, then close **Kate**.

# Troubleshooting

Solutions to common issues.

{% hint style="info" %}
Also check the Windows Troubleshooting page in **p4g-cep-docs.wacz**.
{% endhint %}

<details>

<summary>Error when launching P4G: "Sorry, something went wrong."</summary>

You have reached the temporary activation limit of the **Denuvo DRM** that ships with P4G.

* Denuvo limits the number of machines you can install P4G on within a certain time period. Changing a Proton version or modifying the prefix can cause Denuvo to think you're activating the game on a new machine.
* **There is no fix or workaround for this**—you will have to wait a short time (usually 24–48 hours) for your activation limit to reset.

</details>

## Fixing Most Issues with Reloaded II

### Reinstall Prerequisites

If you're having any trouble with Reloaded II, try [**reinstalling the prerequisites**](/install/protontricks#install-prerequisite-runtimes) to the P4G wineprefix.

### Reset Wineprefix

If Reloaded II still isn't behaving after reinstalling the prerequisites, you'll need to delete, recreate, and reconfigure the P4G wineprefix.

#### Delete P4G Wineprefix

* Launch **Protontricks** and open the **Persona 4 Golden** Winetricks menu.

<figure><img src="/files/sloEvRx4lbaStFXmYnIm" alt=""><figcaption><p>Thanks to <strong>rudiger</strong> for this image.</p></figcaption></figure>

* From the **Winetricks** menu, click **Delete ALL DATA AND APPLICATIONS INSIDE THIS PROTON PREFIX**, then click **OK**.

{% hint style="info" %}
Don't worry, this will not delete P4G itself or any of your mods!
{% endhint %}

<figure><img src="/files/o8JNmJ8Evi6PKXXnvybu" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

* Select **Yes** to confirm that you want to delete the P4G wineprefix.

<figure><img src="/files/COc822DmUv8CwbgZjJsd" alt=""><figcaption></figcaption></figure>

#### Recreate P4G Wineprefix

* Run **Persona 4 Golden** (vanilla, no mods) on Steam to create a brand-new P4G wineprefix.
* Once you reach the title screen, quit P4G.

#### Reconfigure P4G Wineprefix

* Set up the P4G wineprefix again as described on the [**Protontricks**](/install/protontricks#show-dot-files) page.
  * You will need to **enable dot files** and **install the prerequisites** again.
  * If they were configured correctly, you do not need to configure Flatseal or Reloaded II again.
